Hattrixx: Studio Engineer

I run a music production studio in Hornsey (north London, near Alexandra Palace). It's a hardware / software combination studio that's been built to my specific criteria, ideal for producing electronic dance music. How this works is simple. The depth and diversity of your musical background is unique to you. As your engineer, the minimum l ask from you is simply good taste, the will to produce quality music, and the curiosity to see where the combination of these elements will take you. I'll be here for the duration (typically a 10 hour session) to give guidance, make suggestions, answer questions, play keyboards, sequence, and mix the music ready for release. If you want to capture a certain feeling, or create a particular sound, just bring some examples along (or we'll find them while you're here). If you want to try something that's never been done before, we can give that a go as well. There's no requirement to touch the keyboard, operate any of the equipment, or get lost in technicalities. However, if you're already competent in these areas then you're most welcome to do these bits if you want to. If you don't already feel comfortable with these aspects, you'll certainly pick up a thing or two from our time together. The main thing to remember is that each studio session is uniquely tailored to your needs. For peace of mind, I accept payment only on the basis of the results, not the hours. That is to say, unless you're completely satisfied with the results of your session, you do not pay. Usually I will insist on an informal conversation prior to the day so that both parties are clear on what the goals of the session are.

Hattrixx Studio September 2009

^This is the main area. It's a well-lit room, based on a 'floating' design, with studio-ready walls and double doors. It's acoustically treated, including huge, 10 foot bass traps in every corner. There's heating, air conditioning, broadband Internet (wireless and ethernet), and natural light. The small screen in this picture acts as a window into the vocal booth.

Hattrixx Studio Kit September 2009

^Here's some of the kit. A combination of meticulously picked digital and analogue hardware makes for a flexible system, ready to go beyond the demands of top quality dance music. This helps make the creative process fun and easy.

The front door to the building...

^This is the front door to the building, taken from the free car park. As well as the studio and vocal booth, there's a clean bathroom, kitchen and lounge facilities.

Priory park

^The local park (a few minutes away on foot) is great for the occasional quick break. It's beautiful out here and very quiet. It boasts several perfect thinking and resting spots.

...THE SUB...

^My favourite piece of kit, the 10" sub woofer. This is intended for studio use. It accurately extends the bass response, rather than boosting it out of proportion. It was an important addition to my modest satellite monitors. The bottom end is so important in modern music that many claim you can't make dance music without one. It allows me to mix faster and with more precision, which results in a deeper, tighter, more controlled end product.

Vocal booth 1

^The vocal booth. To make sure the recordings are of maximum integrity, it's been built as an isolation room. The camera and talkback system make for a great communication medium, and the star even has the option to switch off the camera if prefered. By all accounts, it's an easy and relaxing environment that's conducive to outstanding performances.

Vocal booth 2

^The same room. There's a lot of space in here, so it can easily be used by a variety of different musicians.

Vocal booth 3

^The booth, facing the window.

GO

^You could probably guess where that's from if you were to take a closer look back over the previous pictures.
